I say “the time has come now
We have to go to sleep”
But you want to sing to stars
Sweep angels off their feet
I say “we need to rest
The morning will come soon”
“Let it come!” You scream
While smiling at the moon
“The moon and I have a secret”
You say, “one I simply cannot tell
To any old battered sunflower
Or crab without a shell”
You smile at me, eyes shining
Burning with their own light
“The day is made for the fearful
But life is lived best at night”
“Let the scared hide away” you say
“And shy away from shadow
Because they won’t ever know joy
Without having tasted sorrow”
“Well, I’ve had too much to drink” I say
“No more sorrow for me
I’ve tasted pain, fear, regret and shame
A bouquet of negativity”
“And what of love?” You ask
“Does it not burn in your embrace
Don’t you tear yourself apart
Seeking loves sweat solace?”
“You cheat!” I say
“Of course love is tied to pain!
You put everything you are on the line
In hopes of what you’ll gain”
“But we don’t need so much darkness
All this pain inside we feel
We don’t need to hurt so much
I never asked for that deal”
You nod but you’re still smiling
You’re grave but full of joy
“So love is more than science?
Though I’m a girl and your a boy?”
“If this is so then kiss me” you whisper
“And confirm your supposition
That feelings can go one way
Without others in opposition”
“We are but flesh and blood”, I say
“Just meat and fluid and bone
We are born confused and scare
And we die scared and alone”
With that you distract me
By pointing to the sky
You pull me close and kiss me deeply
And then you close my eyes
“That feeling you feel can be written down
It can be catalogued and studied too
But love isn’t just what happens
Love is a thing you do”
