More than magic

This is an OLD story of mine. Back when I was in highschool and posted to this collaborative writers group called “the nexus”. It was amazing fun and I honestly wish that I had taken more advantage of it.

My name is Rayne Gray.

Until two weeks ago, my world consisted of a rose garden where our small village is built under. You see, I am a fairy. Don’t start the fairy jokes. I’ve heard them all already. Yeah, is the weather nice down there. Are those wings on my back or am I happy to see you. blah, blah, blah.

I was never the happy, nature-loving, magical being that all my friends were. See, I had always been fascinated by science. I learned the word from this strange book I found while exploring. See, I was always inquisitive. I wanted to know why I would fall if I stopped flapping my wings. I wanted to know how the roses grew. I wanted to know what that bright yellow thing in the sky was.

The book was what I wanted. The only problem was that I didn’t understand it. It was in some other strange language. I couldn’t read it. I had never bothered to learn anything but basic spellcasting. I didn’t know how to write my own spells, I just never wanted to learn. Besides, I didn’t go to school that day.

So I brought the book to my friend Gidget. We used to be more than just friends but, things didn’t work out between us. I was much more interested in how and why things worked than she was. She was content with the knowledge that if you let go of a stone while flying, it will fall down. I wanted to know why the stone fell and how did it happen. Not just that either, I wanted to know what type of stone it was and how did that stone come about. Eventually, our differences were too much so, we broke up. It was pretty friendly though so we kept in touch. Which was good because she knew what I wanted to know.

She weaved the spell pretty quickly, and before long, the whole book was converted to something I understand and made smaller. Now, I could carry it without being pushed to the limit.

I went home and read the book entitled, “Basic Science and You”.

I was enthralled, everything I wanted was here. Everything I’d ever tried to ask the elders was here and it was all explained to me. Sometimes, I had to read a page or even chapter several times before I could actually understand it but, when I did it was fulfilling.

I had to get more, I needed it more than anything. The elders disapproved of my pursuits, they said that it’s not natural for a fairy to wonder why. But, I didn’t care, I wanted to know everything.

The only way that I could think to get more was to find out how the book got here in the first place. When I got there, I found the strangest thing. I found a circle just hanging in the sky. I knew that this was where the book came from. I had to go there but, I didn’t think I’d come back. I knew I would never come back.

I went back to Gidget, told her I was leaving and asked her to prepare a special spell for me. I wanted her to give me the ability to speak the tongue that the book was in. She weaved this spell much slower because it would be permanent. I would not be able to unlearn the tongue after this. I didn’t really notice when the spell took effect, I just felt a tingling in my tongue, it felt like someone had poked my tongue or I had bit it. I hugged her one last time before I left.

I stepped through the portal.

I was lucky that I could fly. The other side was at the bottom of a large circular basket filled with rubbish. I crawled out of all the trash and flew onto the edge of the basket. What I saw blew my mind.

Giants of all sorts stomped along the place, immensely tall structures made of iron or brick or other strange materials were everywhere. Lights littered the place. The whole place was moving and changing with each second that I stared. The whole place proved that I was right,

There is more than magic.
